How long have you been in your industry?3 years
Why did you choose your industry?I went into leadership coaching and consulting when I was approached by classmates and friends that were running their own start-ups and businesses and sought me out for advice on leading their teams and organizations, dealing with personnel challenges, best practices for organizing their companies to maximize the abilities of their existing leaders.
Who are your typical clients? So far they've been small or mid-size companies, most often sole proprietors or small partnerships. All of them have great business acumen but are seeking ways to better connect with and lead their small teams. I provide them with tailored, practical, relevant, and achievable leadership lessons and suggestions which I honed in the Marine Corps and my corporate career.
What do you like best about being in this industry?Seeing the advice and lessons I provide to my clients produce tangible results for them. Sometimes I see the results directly, especially when conducting a leadership workshop for the organization. Other times I hear about the positive results after the fact. But either way, helping leaders become more confident and create lasting improvements for their companies is rewarding for me.
What are common problems you see?Equating leadership to management. They are not the same. Leadership must focus on people and developing relationships based on trust and mutual respect - all related to human dynamics. The goal of leadership is to get your teams to WILLINGLY take on and accomplish tasks they otherwise wouldn't, or thought they couldn't, do. Management is about stuff - resources - not people.
What advice/tips do you have for clients?Leadership can be learned and honed...you don't have to be born a natural leader. I wasn't and many of the best leaders I ever worked for admitted they had to work hard to be good leaders too. So, the moral is...it's never too late to improve your leadership skills and the best leaders are those who continually try to improve. Also, leadership is not learned overnight. It takes a while - sometimes a long time - to develop the leadership traits and make them habits; this is especially true if there are bad habits to unlearn first. But the sooner you start, the sooner you improve.
When is your busy season?I don't have one yet...but I'm hoping to get one! :-)
What keeps you up at night?Concerns that leadership challenges can morph into disgruntled employees and insider threats to an organization before solid leadership and intervention can address the problems. Engaged leadership is the best prevention & mitigation to insider threats, including workplace violence.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?Right now I'm doing grass root marketing with family, friends, fellow veterans, former classmates, colleagues, and networking connections. Eventually, I may work with professional marketers to help expand my client base, but for now word-of-mouth is working.
How involved are you in the community? In addition to supporting The Honor Foundation, I support my business school alma mater by serving on the McCombs Ambassador Committee. I also am active with my church and various other civic groups and technology forums in Austin, which is an amazing technology hub. I'm trying to serve on the Lake Travis ISD Safety and Security Committee, but haven't been selected for it yet.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity? The Honor Foundation (THF) - www.Honor.org. THF provides education and support to transitioning special operations community service members. I support by serving as an ambassador for THF in central Texas.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?First, know what you're talking about because leadership, by its definition, is dealing with human dynamics; you don't want to make leaders worse off with bad advice because that can have serious consequences. Second, have real world experience to back up what you're selling because people will realize quickly if what you're providing is all talk.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Activities with my family - going to sporting events and some world-class museums in Austin and Texas, horseback riding, vacations - especially to a beach to do some surfing. Personally, I love to workout and I have two gyms in my home to support that hobby.
