Can you share a moment or experience that significantly deepened or shaped your faith journey?

After a freak accident in 2011 that triggered multiple painful injuries and a rare disease, all hope seemed lost. After 3 long years of doctor’s visits with no improvement, I ask God to give me a way to heal myself and heal others. The answer I received was: “Use the drums.” I accepted the challenge and was miraculously healed in just 2 weeks. I thought my story was over. But it was just beginning.

In what ways do you actively live out your faith in your daily life — at work, home, or in your community?

I trust God to give me what I need to help me bless others. It could be by tuning in and sharing some words of encouragement, or drumming with people to help them unlock their potential and rise up.

What encouragement or scripture has been especially meaningful to you in this season, and why?

My life verse is Jeremiah 29:11. It helps me when I feel like giving up and I’ve shared it many times with others to help them as well.

What advice would you give to someone who’s struggling to live out their faith or looking to grow spiritually?

I would say to take a step back and just be with the Lord. We often hustle and try to do everything on our own and then ask God to bless our efforts. It doesn’t work that way. You need to abide in Him (I’ve gotten that reminder myself recently!), listen, ask questions, and see what He has in store for you and your gifts.

Morgan:

Welcome back to another episode of Living by Faith, where we highlight faith-based individuals who are making Kingdom Impact. I’m Morgan Yonge, joined today by Dori Staehle with Next Stage Drumming. Dori, thank you so much for being here.

Dori:

Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure. Unfortunately for you guys, I am not in my drum room today because we recently moved and everything is being stored at my church where I do my private and group sessions. So, sorry, I can’t really demonstrate anything today, but you’ll get the hang of things once you hear what I do.

Morgan:

Okay, fantastic, well let’s go ahead and dive on in. So, tell me what it is that you do with Next Stage Drumming.

Dori:

Sure. Well, I started out many years ago, in 1995 as an educational consultant and private tutor, and I realized I was getting a lot of students who had ADHD issues. I don’t like the acronyms, so I changed them. A.D.D. in my book is a delightful dreamer, and ADHD is a definitely hyper drummer. So since since I was already a percussionist, I discovered ways to do certain beats and rhythms and hand movements because I knew, based on my research, that this would help sync up the left and right hemispheres of your brain so you can focus better.

Dori:

The problem with a lot of kids and adults who can’t focus is generally because they tend to be right brain dominant. So it’s a party in their head all day long. Very random abstract thinkers. No concept of time. Math and language reside on the left side of your brain, and that’s what I was tutoring. So in order to wake that up, I decided to throw in a little bit of drumming in my tutoring sessions just to see if it would work.

Dori:

So I had students, for example, who had a 40% accuracy rate on their SAT math problems before drumming, and they had a 100% accuracy rate at the exact same problems after just 5 or 10 minutes of drumming with me. We were using hand drums and other drum set were there in my house, and it worked like a charm.

Dori:
And the students said, miss Dory, I think you’re on to something.

Morgan:

Wow. That is absolutely incredible. Just the mere fact that you put the two together, and then you’ve seen such great results from that, that has led you to this business.

Dori:

Exactly. Tutoring is great, but it’s kind of boring. So I thought, why not just stick with the drumming? So I kind of phased out of that. Although people should know that I have all these things inside me anyway. So people who work with me, they get way more than drumming. They will get the coaching and the consulting and loads of encouragement to help them move forward really fast.

Dori:

In fact, 93% of my private clients have experienced a breakthrough in eight sessions or less. That’s once a week for a half an hour for the little ones, and 45 minutes to an hour for the teens and adults.

Morgan:
Oh, beautiful. So tell me, what is your “why”? What is in your heart, your “why” behind why you do what you do.

Dori:
Well, it’s mainly because I know what it feels like to feel stuck and not being able to figure out what to do with your gifts and talents, number one, or just to have so many ideas in your brain that you can’t focus. So I was meeting a lot of people who didn’t realize not only who they were, but whose they were.

Dori:

So it was an identity issue, and they didn’t understand how incredibly gifted and talented they were in many cases, or what their potential was. So I would work with them and say, this is what I see. So I try not to freak people out. If I do get any divine downloads, I will explain, you know, this might resonate with you, it might not.

Dori:

But I can see you doing this in the future. And it blows their mind because they just were so limiting. They were limiting their beliefs. They have heard, especially the kids and some adults, all their lives, you can’t do this. Who do you think you are? And they had very negative mindsets that were ingrained, and it usually was something that was told to them, either by a teacher or a parent.

Dori:
So I will use specific beats and rhythms to help them reset, restore, release, and rise up.

Morgan:

That is absolutely incredible. I love what you are doing. So, how are you weaving faith into what you are doing with Next Stage Drumming?

Dori:

Well, I work with people of all different faiths and backgrounds, but since they do meet me at my church and they can see the scriptures on the walls, and all I do explain to them where I’m coming from and how it’s totally different than anything that’s out there. It’s not a drum circle, it’s not African or shamanic drumming, it’s faith based rhythms that come to me and I share with them.

Dori:

And I’ll also explain to them, when I can get away with it, and I usually can, how God sees them so they know. And they just feel so much more encouraged to know that they are seen, they are loved, and that there’s hope.

Morgan:

Absolutely. Well thank you so much for the great work that you are doing, and for sharing your love of the Lord with these young adults. I appreciate it.

Dori:

Sure thing. Yeah, it’s my pleasure. It’s so rewarding to see even kids who are non-verbal suddenly speaking, stressed out entrepreneurs suddenly gained clarity, and even working with people virtually where they just drum on their legs or desk or a book or doing virtual training. The trainer programs for agencies who work with victims of human trafficking, for example. I had no idea that I could use drumming in so many different ways to bless so many different people.

Dori:

So it’s just been my pleasure and it’s very humbling.

Morgan:
Yeah, I bet. Thank you so much, it’s so incredible what you’re doing.

Dori:
Thanks again. I appreciate you and what you’re doing.

Morgan:
